Improving the resiliency of earthen structures in active seismic zones is a critical component of worldwide Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) initiatives. Learn how researchers at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (PUJ) in Bogotá are leveraging MTS technology and expertise to explore new methods for protecting vulnerable earth-based historical structures and dwellings across Colombia.
PUJ is using their MTS test infrastructure to subject examples of Colombia’s earthen architectural heritage to high-fidelity, real-world earthquake simulations: the strong wall/actuators were used to test a full-scale (6.2m tall) model of historic Barrio La Candelaria construction; while the shake table was used to test a 1:2 scale (3m tall) structure of tapia pisada (rammed earth) construction.
