Bionix Orthopaedic Subsystems

A wide variety of orthopaedic subsystems are configured to work in your standard MTS Bionix material test system to facilitate kinematic or wear properties studies. Precisely configured to reproduce the motions of the human body, these systems are used by researchers to characterize dynamic properties of biomedical materials and components. Extremely versatile and compact, these systems employ highly configurable FlexTest® controls, proven MTS test application software and environmental chambers.

Model Comparison

Hip Wear Subsystem

  • For long-term tests of hip replacement wear and fatigue
  • Achieves the following motions:
    • Flexion / extension (120 degrees)
    • Abduction / adduction (60 degrees - medial / lateral motion)
    • Internal / external rotation (greater than 20 degrees)
  • Following activities can be programmed in combination: level walking, descending / ascending stairs, sitting in / rising from a chair

Femoral Fatigue Subsystem

  • For testing femoral stem components of hip replacements to ASTM 1440 and ISO 7206-4
  • Includes load cell adapter, potting cup base, chamber and seals, chamber holder and thrust bearing and lower housing assembly

Knee Wear Subsystem

  • Performs active flexion testing with these six degrees of freedom:
    • Axial loading to 5 kN
    • Torsion (tibial rotation greater than 20 degrees)
    • Flexion / extension up to 120 degrees
    • Anterior-posterior shearing to 20 mm
    • Varus / valgus alignment (free-floating)
    • Medial / lateral (free-floating)
  • Following activities can be programmed in combination: level walking, descending / ascending stairs, sitting in / rising from a chair

Spine Kinematics Subsystem

  • Addresses spinal flexion, extension, lateral bending, axial rotation, axial force and displacement, and combined motions
  • Combined motion accelerates testing to make the most of highly perishable cadaveric specimens
  • Smooth motion facilitates precise evaluations

Dental Implants

  • For testing dental implant durability
